For the Cycle: The Beast which is inside...
Alba Gonzales' last works are really not reassuring.
Here we are very far from the period when Carlo Belli,
in his presentation of tne show of the sculpturer's works
in Via Veneto in 1981, availed himself of the
opportunity to assert that sculpture is nothing but the
right positioning of a volume in space. That is what he
distinctly perceived in this artist's work. Now, the last
pieces do not hold their place in space less well, as a
matter of fact. Better still, it is the question of the
content of an art work that gained an overwhelming
importance in Alba Gonzales' imagination, and it is no
longer possible to watch these things only through the
quiet contemplation of form. On such foundations, one
could think that Alba Gonsales reached a turning-point
towards a kind of up-dated and bewildering
expressionism. But in reality it is not that, because the
sense of balance and elegance of form and the idea of
harmony of composition and of the lashioning ofmatter,
which characterized her works before, are not lost. On
the contrary, they are strengthened, lending them a
peculiar ambivalence.
On the one hand, in fact, there is a very outburst of
anger and aggressiveness in formulation, that puts the
troubling and obscrure aspect of the artist's creativity
into full evidence. On the other hand, she still maintains
that unaltered control of form which always keeps its
harmonious balance that almost seems to try to make
up for the still explicit message imbued inher works.
Thus, the images springing from her fantasy are the
product of this complexity: they aim at a superior
beauty but are distressed by that what a great
pessimistlike Cesare Pavese called the "work of living".

Per il Ciclo: La bestia che e' dentro...
"Non sono propriamente rassicuranti i lavori degli
ultimi tempi di Alba Gonzales.
Siamo ben distanti dal periodo in cui Carlo Belli,
presentando la mostra delle opere della scultrice a Via
Veneto nel 1984, coglieva l'occasione per ribadire
come la scultura altro non sia se non la giusta
collocazione di un volume nello spazio, e questo
percepiva con chiarezza nel lavoro dell'artista.
Non che gli ultimi pezzi non si collochino bene nello
spazio, anzi!
Ma la questione del contenuto dell'opera d'arte e' salita
vertiginosamente nell'immaginario di Alba Gonzales e
non e' piu' possibile guardare a queste cose con la sola
calma contemplazione della forma.
Con queste premesse si potrebbe pensare a una svolta
radicale di Alba Gonzales verso una specie di
espressionismo aggiornato e conturbante, ma in realta'
non e' cosi', perche' quel senso di equilibrio e di
eleganza della forma e quella idea dell'armonia della
composizione e di elaborazione della materia che
sempre l'anno caratterizzata, non sono affatto venuti
meno, ma anzi si sono rafforzati, conferendo alle
immagini una singolare ambivalenza.
Da un lato, infatti, esplode letteralmente la rabbia e
l'aggressivita' della formulazione che mette in piena luce
l'aspetto inquietante e oscuro della creativita'
dell'artista, dall'altro, pero', rimane intatta la vigilanza
sulla forma che resta sempre in un equilibrio armonioso
che vorrebbe quasi riscattare il pur esplicito messaggio
calato nelle opere.
Cosi' le immagini che oggi scaturiscono dalla sua
fantasia sono il prodotto di questa complessita', tese
verso una superiore bellezza ma angosciate da quello
che un grande pessimista come Cesare Pavese chiamo'
il "mestiere di vivere".
